Ontario has more homes than any other province and, with them, the largest residential drain market in the country. The Greater Toronto Area is crowded and expensive to advertise in, mid-sized cities such as Hamilton, London and Ottawa have their own competitive fields, and northern Ontario has longer, colder winters and wide service areas. A drain company's marketing has to fit the part of the province it works in. Ontario also has the clearest municipal program we've confirmed for drain-related work: Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program.
Housing and buyers
Ontario's cities mix older neighbourhoods of detached and semi-detached homes with newer suburbs, townhouses and a great many apartments. For residential drain work, the detached and semi-detached homeowner is the core buyer of lateral inspection and replacement, and older streets are where camera findings most often turn into repair quotes.
Other buyers matter too:
- Owners of houses with rental units, who need fast, documented service when a tenant's drain backs up.
- Buyers of older homes, who book pre-purchase sewer inspections.
- Families managing an older relative's home, who often decide on large repairs from a distance and need clear reports.
Condominium and large rental buildings are a commercial sale; our sister site DrainageMarketing.ca covers that buyer.
Climate and seasons
Southern Ontario has cold winters moderated near the Great Lakes, and northern Ontario has longer, colder ones. Drain owners in the south often talk about heavy rain and spring thaw as busy times, while those in the north work with deeper cold. We don't plan from those generalities; we pull each client's call history by week and job type, then set the calendar.
Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program
Toronto's program is directly relevant to drain companies because much of the work it supports is done alongside drain and sewer jobs. According to the City of Toronto's program page (modified June 18, 2026; checked October 2026):
- The City covers 80% of the invoiced cost of eligible flood-protection work, up to set maximums, and as of May 1, 2026 offers up to $6,650 per property.
- Eligible items for work done on or after November 12, 2025 include a home plumbing assessment, backwater valves (up to two devices), a sump pump with alarm, battery backup, and severing and capping the foundation drain.
- Applicants must be registered owners of a single-family home, duplex, triplex or fourplex in Toronto, and must meet other conditions, including downspout disconnection.
- Contractors must hold valid City of Toronto business licences when the work is done.
- Funding is first-come, first-served and subject to annual Council approval.
For marketing, this means a Toronto drain company can build a helpful, accurate page about the program, linked to the City, with a reminder to confirm eligibility. It also means showing your City of Toronto business licence clearly is worth doing. Don't promise amounts or approval; the City decides.
We have not confirmed similar programs in other Ontario municipalities on official pages as of October 2026, so we don't name any.
Regulators and rules
Plumbing in Ontario sits within the Ontario Building Code and municipal permitting. We don't paraphrase code requirements on marketing pages, and we don't give compliance advice. Where a page mentions permits or backwater valve installation, it should link the municipality's own information.
How we'd approach drain marketing in Ontario
- Narrow your geography in the GTA. Advertising across the whole region is expensive; focus on the areas your trucks reach quickly. See drain local search.
- Separate urgent and planned budgets so backup ads don't starve inspection campaigns. See backup call capture.
- Build an accurate program page where a municipal subsidy is confirmed, as in Toronto.
- Turn inspections into repairs with clear findings and quotes. See inspection content and our lateral quote guide.
Proof and tax
Our proof is from HVAC work and labelled as such: Roma Heating & Cooling grew organic traffic 400% in 12 months. The results page explains what transfers to drains.
Ontario clients pay 13% HST on our fees, as of October 2026, per the Canada Revenue Agency's rates. Plans are on the pricing page.
We market Ontario drain companies; we are not a contractor and don't do drain, sewer or plumbing work.
Frequently asked questions
What tax do Ontario clients pay on your fees?
13% HST, as of October 2026.
Can we advertise Toronto's basement flooding subsidy?
You can tell Toronto homeowners the program exists and link the City's page. Don't promise eligibility or amounts; the City sets the rules, funding is first-come, first-served, and homeowners should confirm with the City.
Does the Toronto program have rules for contractors?
The City's page says contractors must hold valid City of Toronto business licences when the work is done. Check the page yourself for the full conditions before you mention the program.
Do other Ontario cities have similar programs?
Some may, but we've only confirmed Toronto's on an official page so far. We check each municipality's own page before naming any program.
